After inserting the transmitter key into the ignition/starter switch (S2/1) the ID code of the transmitter key is received inductively by the transponder coil when circuit 15 is ON. It directly relays the ID code to the SAM control unit for checking. If the ID code is valid, the SAM control unit relays this information via CAN to the ME-SFI control unit which enables the engine control. Moreover, the transmitter key is supplied inductively with power via the transponder coil, so that the vehicle can also be started when the battery in the vehicle transmitter key is discharged. Up to 6 transmitter keys can be used. The key data is managed by the SAM control unit. Status messages from the drive authorization systems are transmitted to the instrument cluster by the SAM control unit. The instrument cluster sends the status message via the multifunction display.

Wiping When the wiper switch is moved upwards, the wiper can be activated at 2 different speeds. In position 1 wiping takes place at slow speed, and in position 2 wiping takes place at fast speed. The request is read in by the SAM control unit, which actuates the wiper motor directly. The next slower wiping speed is selected if the vehicle is stationary. The wiper is actuated in accordance with the request at speeds of 5 km/h and above. Switching back to position 0 deactivates the wiper function. If deactivation takes place during a wiper operation, the wiper motor is not switched off until the park position has been reached. Park position feedback is provided by a signal contact integrated in the wiper motor. Wiping with washer fluid The window washer fluid pump is actuated directly by pulling the wiper switch backwards and holding it in position. Actuation takes place for as long as the switch is held in this position. At the same time, the SAM control unit actuates the wiper motor with a time delay of approx. 0.2 s. The wiper motor is actuated for an additional 3 wipe cycles at the end of the request. If the wipe request was made by tapping the wiper switch, only one wipe cycle is performed. Intermittent wipe (in vehicles without code (V54) Rain/light sensor) Moving the wiper switch downwards requests the intermittent wipe function. The wiping interval is speed- dependent and decreases as the speed increases. The following wiping intervals are implemented by the SAM control unit: Wipe every 15 s at v = 0 km/h Wipe every 12 s at v > 5 km/h Wipe every 7 s at v > 50 km/h Wipe every 5 s at v > 75 km/h Intermittent wipe (in vehicles with code (V54) Rain/ light sensor) Moving the wiper switch downwards requests the intermittent wipe function. The wiping interval depends on the wetness of the windshield. The rain/light sensor determines the wetness of the windshield and relays the activation request to the SAM control unit via LIN B. This actuates the wiper motor accordingly. The rail/light sensor does not issue an activation request if a wipe request with washer fluid is active. The status of the wiper motor is transferred to the rain/light sensor by the SAM control unit via LIN B. Hazard warning flasher actuation as a result of rapid deceleration If the vehicle is braked from a speed of more than 35 mph to a standstill, the hazard warning system is automatically activated. The current speed is determined by the ESP control unit and relayed via the CAN to the SAM control unit, which activates the hazard warning flasher function. The hazard warning flasher function is deactivated automatically after starting off as soon as the vehicle speed reaches 6 mph, or manually using the hazard warning flasher switch. Hazard warning flasher in event of crash In the event of a crash the request is transmitted by the restraint systems control unit via the CAN to the SAM control unit, which activates the hazard warning flasher function. The hazard warning flasher function is switched off by operating the hazard warning flasher switch in the cockpit switch group. In the event of a crash, the doors are also unlocked and the fuel pump with fuel level sensor (M3/3) is switched off. Hazard warning flasher feedback Visual feedback of the active hazard warning flasher function is provided by the indicator lamp in the hazard warning flasher switch and the indicator lamps in the instrument cluster, which are only active if circuit 15 is on, however. Acoustic feedback is also output on the speaker in the instrument cluster in the form of a turn signal sound indicator. If one of the turn signal lamps fails, the flashing frequency of the turn signal indicator lamps, the flashing frequency of the other turn signal lamps and the frequency of the turn signal sound indicator do not change. Rear window intermittent wiping is activated by pushing the wiper switch forwards past the detent point. The request is read in by the SAM control unit, which actuates the wiper motor directly. Wiper arm park position feedback is provided by the signal contact that is integrated in the rear-end door wiper motor. Wiping with washer fluid The window washer fluid pump is actuated directly by pushing the wiper switch forwards and holding it in position. At the same time, the SAM control unit actuates the rear-end door wiper motor with a time delay of approx. 0.2 s. Three additional wiping cycles are performed after the wiper switch has been released. Automatic wiping when reverse gear is engaged If the windshield wiper system is active and the outside temperature is above 5°C, the rear-end door wiper motor is actuated automatically by the SAM control unit for one wiping cycle when the reverse gear is engaged. position. The electronic speedometer is used to display vehicle speed. The speedometer is driven by a stepper motor. Measuring the vehicle speed The instrument cluster receives from the ESP control unit (N47-5) the wheel speeds required for the computation of vehicle speed via the Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN). The tire size is taken into account when calculating the speed. Coding takes place using STAR DIAGNOSIS. Assessment of wheel speed signals: The wheel speed signals are compared against each other and thus checked in terms of plausibility. If there are no significant deviations, the vehicle speed is calculated from the rotational speed of the left front wheel. If the individual wheel speed signals vary substantially, the speed signals may be faulty or the vehicle may be cornering. If, by comparing the wheel speeds on both sides of the vehicle, the instrument cluster determines that the car is cornering, the vehicle speed is calculated from the mean value of the front wheel speeds. If the comparisons indicate one or more faulty wheel speed signals, the vehicle speed is then calculated on the basis of highest wheel speed. This also applies if an error message is received instead of a wheel speed signal. The travel distance is determined as for the vehicle speed. This procedure must be carried out by specialist companies. Picture shows ISO symbol for return and recycling Old lead-acid batteries and lead-gel batteries should not be mixed together as this would make recycling more difficult. Always store lead-acid batteries horizontally and do not tilt during transport. Lead batteries can be taken back to the respective manufacturer, to sales outlets and to scrap metal dealers and are recycled at lead recycling plants. Recycled lead is fed back into the production process. The disposal of batteries as domestic waste is not permitted and is forbidden by law. The travel distance is determined as for the vehicle speed.

the fuel injection valves are supplied with sufficient fuel during starting. An engine start must be completed, however, before repeated actuation of the fuel pump with fuel level sensor. Starting The start function is activated by turning the transmitter key from position 1 (circuit 15 On) to position 2 (circuit 50 On) in the ignition/ starter switch. Actuation of the starter takes place directly by the SAM control unit. The start process is ended again as soon as terminal 50 is no longer applied at the SAM control unit or the engine cranking speed is reached. Start quantity control As soon as the first RPM signal is recognized by the crankshaft position sensor during the start process, the SAM control unit energizes the fuel pump with fuel level sensor permanently. In order to facilitate starting of a cold engine, fuel is also injected during the starting procedure. The increase in injection quantity (start quantity) takes place depending on the coolant temperature and is achieved through extending the injection time. The start quantity control is enabled after starter recognition and remains active until a stable idle speed is recognized by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The higher the coolant temperature, the lower is the start quantity enable by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. Post-start enrichment When the engine is cold, fuel precipitates on the walls of the intake manifold and is not available to the engine for combustion. The missing fuel volume is compensated by the post-start enrichment function. After the cold start the fuel-air mixture is enriched for short time through longer injection times of the fuel injection valves. Post-start enrichment is achieved by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and is dependent on the coolant temperature at engine start. Airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units must be forwarded in their original packaging, via the familiar MeRSy disposal channel (Renz), for proper and environmentally-friendly scrapping. In all countries except national regulations governing proper disposal need to be complied with. These safety precautions are necessary because pyrotechnic devices can inflict injuries when activated improperly.
