2007-2014 smart (450_451_452_454) - Workshop Repair Manual.pdf · p. 833 · Applies to: 450, 451, 452, 454 · AR: GF49.10-P-2010MCU

DESCRIPTION - GF49.10-P-2010MCU > ENGINES 132.9 in MODEL 451.3/4 Location The three-way catalytic converter is located on the rear end of the vehicle, behind the bumper. Task The three-way catalytic converter cleans exhaust gases coming from the engine and reduces the noise emissions. Design The catalytic converter mainly consists of a ceramic monolith. Ceramic monoliths are ceramic bodies through which pass several thousand small passages. The exhaust gas flows through these passages. The ceramic consists of high temperature-resistant magnesium aluminum silicate. The monolith, which is extremely sensitive to voltages, is embedded in an elastic wire mesh made of high- alloy steel wires and fitted in a double-walled stainless steel housing. Ceramic monoliths require a substrate made out of aluminum oxide which increases the effective surface of the catalytic converter. The active catalytic layer coated on the substrate is available in three-way catalysts primarily out of platinum and rhodium. Platinum accelerates oxidation of the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide. Rhodium accelerates reduction of nitrogen oxides. Fig 1: Locating Three-Way Catalytic Converter Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA.

The fuel pump provides the fuel injection system, under all operating conditions, with an adequate supply of fuel at the required pressure. The integral fuel level sensor determines the fuel level in the fuel tank and emits an appropriate voltage signal to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10). Design The fuel pump mainly consists of a vane pump, a swirl pot and the fuel level sensor. Function Actuation of the fuel pump is by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. It suctions the fuel through a fuel strainer and the swirl pot out of the fuel tank. While cornering when the fuel level is low, the swirl pot prevents the fuel pump from drawing in air. The suctioned out fuel is pumped over the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator to the fuel distributor. The tank pressure sensor is located on the top in the center of the fuel tank. Task The tank pressure sensor records the internal pressure of the fuel tank for checking leaks in the fuel system (leak test) and transmits a corresponding voltage signal to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10). The power is supplied via the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. BASIC KNOWLEDGE > COMPONENT DESCRIPTION FOR THE TANK VENT VALVE - GF47.30-P-4037MCC > MODEL 451.3/4 with ENGINE 132.9 Location The tank vent valve is mounted on the intake manifold. Task The tank vent valve leads fuel vapors arising in the fuel tank to combustion. Design The tank vent valve is fitted with a solenoid which actuates the integral valve.
