Lost boost on your 453 turbo or going into safe mode? It’s becoming a common issue. This is the turbo on your 453 engine. Highlighted in the photo below is the part causing the issue. The wastegate actuator. The wastegate actuator adjusts the boost by diverting boost away from the turbine wheel. The more boost it diverts, the less boost the turbo creates. If the wastegate is faulty, it’ll either stay stuck open, giving you no boost. Or it’ll stick closed and the car will over boost and go into safe mode. Fixing The Problem The back of the wastegate is covered by a black plastic cap. Error Codes When it starts causing intermittent issues, it doesn’t seem to cause any codes. In this circumstance, diagnosing through symptoms is better. However, when it gets really bad, Ben C found that it would create a load of totally unrelated error codes which could steer you in totally the wrong direction. So again, diagnosing through symptoms is better. These are the codes that he discovered using MB Star Xentry. (Generic error codes will be even worse). P0226F3 – Position sensor 1 for the accelerator pedal has a malfunction. P065117 – Output 2 for the reference voltage of the sensors has an electrical fault or an open circuit. The limit value for electrical voltage has been exceeded. P065116 – Output 2 for the reference voltage of the sensors has an electrical fault or an open circuit. The limit value for electrical voltage has not been attained. P033564 – Position sensor 1 for the crankshaft has an electrical fault. There is an implausible signal. P22D429 – The output for the low-pressure turbocharger has a malfunction. There is an invalid signal. B126768 The ECO start/stop function has a malfunction. B127415 Component ‘E19/1 (Left license plate lamp) / E19/2 (Right license plate lamp) has a malfunction. There is a short circuit to positive or an open circuit. Why Is It Creating Unrelated Codes? The wastegate does give feedback to the ECU on what it’s doing, unless one of the sensor connections shorts, Then the ECU knows there’s an issue with the wastegate and it may create a correct code for it. If it shorts the motor power or earth, it can leak power, causing the motor to move slowly, erratically or not at all. This can cause no codes. Eventually you start getting short circuiting in the wastegate and depending on what it short circuits to what, either the wastegate stops moving in the way it should (and you get boost issues) or it clamps the ECU signal to live or ground. The ECU has a spaz out and logs a bunch of unrelated codes. Click if info helped 47 likes 29224 views Print
