I recently got asked, "How many miles do you get to a tank of fuel in your smart?" And I had to be honest and answer, "I have no idea because these aren't things that I generally measure." So, in this video, we're going to find out. Now, I think it's worth mentioning that this is a smart pure. This means it has the semi-automatic soft tip and not the soft touch fully automatic. And this may affect the fuel consumption. You'll also notice the coin holder here. And yes, the lack of MHD stop starts switch means it's one of the rare earlier models, which is a 71 brake horsepower non MHD car. It's just got the regular alternator there. You can see the tire pressures are all correctly set. It's on steel wheels. And the car has been recently serviced. It's covered 62,000 miles. So, now you have the basics on the car. Let's go and get it filled up. [Music] And with a full tank, we can now embark on the challenge. I reset the myometer. At this point, I left the petrol station curious about how many miles I'd get on this tank of E5 97 octane fuel. It's important that the MPG figures are true to life. So, I'm just going to drive normally. I'm not going to spend the next few days driving like a [ __ ] I became especially excitable when this beautiful red Citroen 2CV went past. You just don't see those anymore. It's the end of day one, 43 mi, and the gauge hasn't moved a bit. And these wipers, well, they got a bit too friendly with each other. In fact, I think they were about to mate. First of all, they collided and then this driver's one ended up right over here somewhere. Actually, off the tridian. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit driving the BMW. But fortunately, using a nice slim 1/4in drive extension and 13 mil socket, I was able to get this in here and tighten this nut, which had come loose. without removing the scuttle. It's just possible with this. When the gauge is at the halfway point, we've done 144 miles. Down to one bar on the gauge. And it really won't be long now until the 5 L countdown begins. [Music] Down to 4 L. And I'm not going to push my luck. I'm now back at the petrol station to fill up. 278 miles. [Applause] I covered 278.2 miles and with a fresh tank of fuel, let's go home and do the maths. I filled up with 26.23 L and I make that 5.77 imperial gallons. I've done the calculations. That car returned 48.21 MP gallon over 278.2
