in today's video I'm going to be carrying out a service on the smart this is an mot certificate and I'm very pleased to say that it has passed but the service indicator is showing in fact it's saying that it's 174 days overdue so that's what we're going to put right today we have engine oil we have a genuine oil filter we have a sun plug washer three denzo spark plugs and an air filter element from Bosch not too bad you will note that in the bottom of the air filter casing there are two of these little grommets they're actually a one-way valve to let water out this left one wasn't in properly so I've just refitted it correctly and you can see how that works if any water builds up in there or comes in through the intake it can drain out like that here is the new Bosch filter hard to see the part numbers cuz somebody's written on it there but I think this is the reference and don't get the middle clip under there we now move on to the spark plugs and there's one coil pack per cylinder these are very easily disconnected you simply press this tab and disconnect you may be thinking why are you pulling on the wires that silly or there's really not a lot of force involved and it's just easier than trying to get my great big hands down in there if necessary you can pull off this breather pipe which just gives you a little bit more room for this last connector and we now have one bolt that holds each of these cor packs in place these are 10 mil I need to be careful not to drop these down into the engine bay can use a magnet if necessary so you got three of those and then these cor packs just pull out like that if you find that the ends of any of these Co packs are wet with oil then the cam cover gasket is leaking fortunately these are dry here are the spark plugs and there you can see the part number I use deno in these cars because I find that they run well on them and we need a 16 mil deep socket designed for removing spark plugs they often have a rubber insert which helps grip the spark plug but this is long gone using a suitable extension we can drop these down into The Spar plug recesses and go about removing them and then loosen by hand now that's fully undone and because this has lost its grippy insert thing I just use a magnet to retrieve the plug like that and there it is another denzo and exactly the same plugs looking at Old versus new you can really see the difference in the Gap and you can see seeing just how warm the electrodes are what a difference another massive gap on that one I wonder if these have been in since new just a quick old versus new there drop those into the cylinders carefully

retighten each one hand tight this isn't making very good TV is it just my hand my arm those are all hand tight now I can just SNP those up then talk them to the correct setting these are torqued to just 18 Newton M with the new Spar plugs in there and tored up to 18 Newton M we can now just uh drop the coils back in there I always put them back in the same place you don't technically have to because they're all the same but that's just kind of how I do it and now we just retighten these now these do not have to be Mega tight I think they meant to be 10 Newton M I kind of know how that feels just nip them up reconnect the connectors to the coil packs and don't forget to refit that little breather pipe there on the end of the cam cover this whole engine bay is actually quite grubby and Dusty and these cars often go that way I also need to reattach this soundproofing up here which you can use sticky pads for but I can't do it today because it's a damp day and this just feels damp when my glove was off I felt it and it's just not dry so that's for another day but at some point I will clean this all properly cuz it is a bit Dusty and nasty it's now time to get this back together take it for a really good drive get everything hot ready for the oil change I didn't want to do that before cuz I wanted to be able to work on it not burn myself doing these plugs so I'm just taking this car for a good drive to get the engine warmed up so the oil can drain freely there's one thing you're probably wondering and that is what about the clutch well I've done nearly 200 mil since theot and the really weird thing is there is no problem with the clutch in fact I'd say this is probably one of the nicest smarts I've driven in terms of the gear change I've driven it in dry conditions I've driven it in Rain through big puddles and at no point do I have any problems with the gear change now I was under the impression that this car would throw itself into neutral if you allowed it to change down by itself cuz remember this is a soft tip not a soft touch so you do have to change gear itself it's a semi-automatic but I've even let it change all the way down back down into first when I come to a stop and it's not once caused a problem so I don't know whether this was a battery voltage issue as the battery was completely dead quite a long time when I first got the car or whether this is coincidence or whether it's yet to do this to me probably on a rainy day when I least expect it or need it but if it's working well I'm happy with it so I'll just keep driving it I've got the vehicle raised up on this side and supported with an axle stand for safety reasons now here's the sump drain plug and it's important to State one thing these are prone to cracking here on the sump if you apply excessive force when trying to loosen this this is exacerbated by the fact that it may have been previously overtightened or it may not have been off for a while so to minimize this we kind of want to be undoing it with a force going upwards here rather than pulling down here let's see how tight this is It's Worth stating this is a 24 the socket needs to be shallow or you won't get it on there it's released and with a con it under here we can now loosen this just enough it's so bloody windy today it's going everywhere this weather really is something else at the moment never move to Britain if you like good weather this is just ridiculous God I hate this country sometimes right I think we need a stronger flow so let's just initi that right there we go we got a stronger

flow now that's less likely to be corrupted by the weather I've now fully withdrawn the sump drain plug and it's good to see that this little gauze here this little pickup Gau is nice and clear nevertheless I will clean it with some brake cleaner at this point I'm going to lower the vehicle down so it's all level and we can let everything drain out naturally at the correct ride height and with everything back on the ground time to go and have a cup of tea and let that do its thing and completely drain out here is the genuine oil filter little smear of fresh oil on the Rubber seal just before we put the sump drain plug back in when these crack You See It generally just across here at the bottom this one has survived we tighten this to 65 new M we now refill the official capacity is 3.4 l this car does not have a pollen filter because it's a poverty spec pure model there's no air conditioning but if it had a pollen filter it would be up under there there's a video on this I'll leave a link to it at the end and it'll also be in the video description likewise for the service indicator reset procedure I've already made a video on that petrol 4551 models do not have a fuel filter like the 45's did so that's one less thing to worry about well that's it for today's video the wind out there is absolutely wild and it's blown the oil everywhere tools cloth tissue everything it's been chaos and an awful day to be doing this but at least I managed to get it finished before the rains arrive because it's going to be terrible fairly soon I'll see you again in another video very soon
