hi guys welcome back to the drive live channel in today's video you join me on a quest to finally find the problem with the smart car uh for those who don't know we've had an issue with the smart car where it keeps blowing coil pack fuses um i bought this thing for a thousand pounds um a few months back uh just ahead of the fuel crisis sort of knew what was coming so i thought we'd get a car that could do more to the gallon did great for the first sort of well it's been it's been five months with no issues whatsoever and the other day um the coil pack fuse went every time i turned the ignition on now it keeps going so remove the bumper and what i didn't show you but what i have done replaced all the coil packs ht leads spark plugs etcetera um i've then been through pretty much all the wiring in the engine bay um re-taped any bits that were broken um just sorted it all out that didn't fix it so we've obviously got a bigger electrical issue um and now we're going to go straight for the electrical heart of the smart car and that's called the sam unit now don't ask me what the sound means but essentially it is the fuse box but in these cars it's a little bit more complicated than that um it's basically the electrical brain so it's got all sorts of relays stuff like that um so we're going to give it a go removing this thing today i've got a plan what i'm going to do i've got um one of these proper chalk marker pens and i'm going to mark every plug on the board because we've got to unplug all the plugs on the board uh we've got to open it all up it's quite an involved process um so i thought i'd bring you guys along uh to show you how we get on so first step then um is to actually access the sound unit now it's always on the left-hand side of the car whether you're a right-hand driver or a left-hand drive right-hand driver cars it's easy to get to because we need to do is pull the carpet back this is just to give you more room and pull out this polystyrene insert here uh which would usually hold the jack and the towing eye but uh as a eight owner thousand pound smart car goes uh there isn't any of that stuff left everything's been robbed as much as it can be so here we've got you'd usually have the battery and i've already removed it because it's flat um all the times i've been trying to start it and play with it so that is the lpg system ecu there and two empty battery terminals if you're gonna do this and you haven't unplugged your battery prior you need to leave the car 15 minutes after removing the battery to let all the systems go dead um it's quite an important step otherwise you will get issues probably electrocution issues with the sam unit itself so now we have a lot of access to this sam unit here and i'm just going to go upside down so what we need to do is pull this tab here and that should allow there we go the same unit to flop down now we've got some screws up here that i'm going to remove because we want to completely remove the whole unit if you were just going to get it to swing down to have a better look at the fuses then that would be ideal but we're going to remove the whole unit which is mounted here so we're going to remove those torx bolts and pull the unit out so um okay so we've removed the two screws i'm sure if you guys can see it very easily um so we've just got this black tab here this just pushes up and through and you can remove the sam unit

look how complicated all of this looks um so yeah i'm going to get to work with my trusty marker pen to mark all of these um and so that when it comes to reassembling i don't then get stuck so let's mark this one and get a lid off this thing number one this one number two this one number three i'm just going to remove these tabs what i'm going to do is check for the condition of these as well because my theory is that they're going to have two pins there melted together so there's number one just gonna mark that on the plug number one there we go number two that's number two there okay this one that's number three and he seems all okay as well right this one here is going to be number four this one number five let's just rewrite that four number four five number six number six well you've been there number seven this is quite difficult to write on the um all right what else has this got plugged into it so the plugs in the back we've also got our positive battery terminal um so we're gonna do a positive battery terminal next i'll see if you guys can actually see that there we go positive battery terminal

so that's here so as you can see we've labeled them all and labeled all of the plugs just need to remove the extra fuses here um which i probably should have done beforehand actually a little bit easier but i think they just unclip no special sort of clips keeping them in um move these out the way you see the amount of wiring that goes into this why this is the brain of the the smart car or the electrical brain at least let's see if we can get to this positive battery terminal um i'm going to try a little knife blade just to see if we can [Music] i made this bad boy this is just giving a case of prying it off just like that that looks like a 10 mil nut just got to remove there now that is a lot easier isn't it there's your 10 mil nuts just use a little socket to do that where can i mount this phone here there we go yeah that is 10 mil we need to probably use a ratchet but we're into it now here's our little nut i'm just going to screw that back on once i've removed the battery thing there we go screw it back on so we don't lose it also look at the size of those fuses they're huge um pretty cool right so just going to remove these two now just a case of pushing them down i believe there's no sort of clippiness there there is um how does one remove that then should focus on the back here first all right so we're gonna have eight nine and ten here probably gonna be easy to remove this and then mark it just trying to get to the tab here but i can't seem to find okay very late there's eight there now these ones are a little bit more complicated i need to just push this across i think i'll pull it put it up sorry do an order and i'll push that tab there push it tab there

just like so and that should pull out that was nice and easy this is number nine number nine there let's do this final one here number ten [Music] [Music] in the same place okay i've spotted a way of doing this it's going to be a case of getting this knife blade into the back here poison him back there we go so that's that one there i don't need to label those i don't think i'm going to do it anyway i'm getting the lid off my pen again number eleven same again with this one just get this prize back this tab there we go and user a number 12. here we go we have our sam unit so um yeah time to inspect see if there's any damage if there's not oh god knows what we'll do but um that is how you remove a sam unit thanks for watching don't forget to like comment and subscribe and i'll see you next video cheers
