hi guys welcome back to the drive live channel in today's video we're going to be discussing smart car engines and how long they last now smart cars have been known for me not very reliable um you hear horror stories about them needing engine rebuilds Etc so um yeah we're gonna discuss it in detail tell you everything you need to know and hopefully inform you if you haven't already bought a smart car if you're looking into buying a smart car or um if you own a smart car what to expect as you build up the mileage so let's start off then with the car I drive um it's a 700 CC 42 450. now this 450 generation was offered with three engine choices uh the 700 CC the 600 CC and the 700 CC Brabus now for my 700 CC you can start to expect issues around 70 000 miles they tend to to be foul piston rings crack turbo manifolds burnt exhaust valves and the reason this happens is because the oil gets hot on the piston rings and the growth Valves and they get sticky and that causes burning on the exhaust valves so um the way you can fix this is by fitting an oil cooler and that's actually what's fitted to the 700 CC Brabus engine and these last so up to sort of 130 000 miles obviously you do get variations you get people who will have cars that would last 100 000 miles for 200 000 miles it all depends on the use of what they're used for um and how you look after them um and then ultimately 600 cc is probably the worst of the bunch to have on the 450 Generation Um you you'll probably start to expect to get problems around 60 000 miles which again are fell piston Ridge valves um as well as the turbo manifolds as well um so those are the main 450 engines now they did do an 800 CC CDI diesel which wasn't available here in the UK as a 450 but that lasts well over 280 000 miles these Legends are just tanks and um yeah they this is another engine that is a tank and they only have 54 horsepower uh 45 or 50 generation um so that's yeah one of the reasons is that they're quite a low output engine which helps moving on we have the 451 generation which is the one liter Mitsubishi engines um cars or the petrol cars anyway again these are pretty much dead reliable um 200 000 miles you'd expect and the mhd engine um can have issues on Belt snapping Etc slightly more complicated so I tend to avoid that they sh they can't last but they're more likely to get taken out by strange issues that happen with the mhd system so um yeah they tend to last between 100 to 150 000 miles the 800 CC um CDI engine that was in the 450 is also used in this generation the 45 horsepower and like I said that lasts 250 000 miles at least then I upgraded that to a 54 horsepower version um which lasts slightly less time um they um last around 200 000 miles um and the issue is the EGR cooler can split and overheat the engine and the engine's also grown to um prone to snapping the crankshaft which is uh yeah not ideal next vehicle is obviously the 700 CC smart Road still known as the 452. now these cars obviously have the roads to body and they actually have the same engine as in the 45 OS now they are slightly different because they last up to 180 000 miles there's obviously a fair bit further than the 450s and they have the oil cooler which really does help but they also have slightly improved pistons and exhaust valves with the road star being obviously a smaller sort of a small sports car um smart upgraded these pistons and exhaust valves to put up with a little more um stick and these again is the same in the Brabus version um it's essentially the same engine just a slightly different remap um so they're pretty stout engines too now we don't really know how um any of the other future smart cars will manage um they run Nissan engines the four five

threes um so that's something to consider they're generally considered a Fairly reliable units although the the four rooms a lot of things people assume that they're Renault engines but there actually are the Nissan engines so they're more reliable than a lot of people realize now four five fours which are the first generation four four they um tend to exceed 200 000 Miles because it's the same or it's a slightly different but it is a bulletproof Mitsubishi engine so um yeah they're they're a good car to go for as well so um that is it it really does depend on what engine you have in your smart car as to how long you can expect it to last now you can get engine rebuilds for under 700 pounds nowadays um you can buy rebuild kits if you want yourself uh this is really applies to the 700 to 600 cc's anything other than those engines tend to be pretty good so um yeah thanks for watching don't forget to like comment and subscribe and let me know what engine you have in your smart car what current mileage is your smart cars on and um what generation um it is and why you chose it so um yeah thanks for watching I'll see you next one cheers
