good morning I would like to introduce you to Smart number eight I'm Steven from auton night welcome to another Smart Video something I didn't think I'd be saying so soon after getting rid of the last one I sold the last SM because I had essentially reached the end of the line in terms of content but it seems that I can't live without one of these cars in my life I just enjoy them so much and as I said at the start this is my eighth one and a lot of you have reached out to me messaged me and said that you missed the spark content I bought the Z3 earlier in the year done a lot to it but never really got the viewing figures that my smart content did so I thought it makes sense to get another one scratch that itch again and here we are so for the first time in daylight here is my smart footo pure and you heard that right we're talking base model Chic here so it's got the hard door trims without any carpet it's got windy Windows soft tip semi-automatic as opposed to the switchable soft touch and of course the basic interior that Infamous gray fabric that stains so easily yet these seem to have survived unscathed they are clean now the steering wheels on these are this sort of stippled plastic much more basic than the leatherbound ones on the better models and it has steel wheels as well which I don't actually mind although I'm not sure about the black really but as luck would have it in the Attic in the rafters of my garage I've got a full set of steel wheels for a smart 451 this car had a couple of options from new these little pods and the retractable load blind very useful extras the mileage is good just 60,000 everything Stacks up done a vehicle history check everything's in order see the service light is flashing there so it's well overdue for a service and it's got the solid roof which I think is good in a way because the polycarbonate roofs always deteriorate and become opaque and they seem to be an ongoing battle but this stily roof is not without its issues and you may or may not be able to see see that there is this kind of white area here cuz it's a stippled finish with like a lacquered surface the lacquer peels top layer peels off most of the top layer has actually gone and I've had these in the past where the outer layer is only missing in patches and then it's a devil to get off but I think it's pretty much completely gone top layer which means it will be easier to paint this just with some satin black this is a 71 brake horsepower not non mhd and this is good and you can see here that rather than the button for the uh mhd start stop you've just got a coin holder these basic pures were available with a 61 brake horsepower or a 71 brake and I'm pleased this has got the bigger 71 so we got a black trian and silver panels and I like the fact that it's got the contrast there I always think when it's just all black or all silver can be a little dark and I often toyed with changing the panels on my last smart so it wasn't all silver so this is good this is quite welcome little bit of body damage on this Wing you'll see here it split I think there's evidence of some old filler in there so maybe it got repaired and then it happened again so I will be in the business for a new offside front panel apart from that bodily doesn't seem too bad note the black covers here on the door mirrors again another pure feature these would be painted in body color if it was a better model so that's it not a bad looking machine on the face of it but and there is a big butt here I bought this car as a spares and repairs car because it has a problem and when I called up about about this car it almost seemed like a Deja Vu cuz it's got shifter issues now because this is a soft tip model you do have to take care of the gear changes yourself although it doesn't have a clutch you still need to make the gear changes or at least when you're changing up because if you forget to change down it does it for you but if you let it do it for you it seems to Mis gears it throws itself into neutral and then you have to go through a reset procedure which I've detailed in my other smart videos

essentially you put your foot on the brake put the ignition on and wait and then you hear the clutch actuator going through a reset procedure lots of clicking and clunking and then that gets it moving again so it's not a total breakdown situation but I was told by the chap that I bought it from that it needs a new clutch it's been diagnosed and when I drove it around the lot it was very obvious to me that there was something wrong in the clutch area because there's a lot of noise it's like a rumbling a knocking noise coming from the clutch bell housing and I think the springs on the clutch plate are breaking up this is what I'm thinking so I've taken a chance on this car it didn't cost much and I'm going to have to whip that gearbox out and just see what it needs I've seen a saxs clutch on auto do for just under 100 quid I've also seen an oil leak under there which um is around the kind of bell housing area which I think is probably a rear main or seal so I'll get the flywheel off and I'll change that at the same time along with the drive shaft oil seals on the differential so let's have a look under here so we've got the little 71 brake horsepower pretty standard smart Mitsubishi engine here no Horrors no mayonnaise doesn't have air conditioning and that simplifies things a lot because the air conditioning systems on these are pretty weak anyway and often need attention the only thing it does mean is that this Nordic creature will fry in the summertime so all this will be out when I do the clutch get everything out the way get the gearbox out take care of that let's start it up you can hear it running all very standard stuff now interestingly you can't really hear the rumbling from that clutch area outside the car but you can hear it inside I don't know if this camera will pick up on this I'm going to just stick this GoPro in the boot area and see if you can hear [Music] it I won't really know if that's audible until I edit this video but trust me it's there other things it's very wet under here this sponge has soaked up put awful lot of water it's very damp and it could be the wind screen cuz it's not actually very well fitted it's not the original you can see here Pilkington there a bigger Gap this side than there is the other side I don't think it was done recently either because it's got evidence of delamination in the corner here so it's very likely that this windc screen is leaking it's very common and due to the atmospherics right now this is causing the interior to steam up quite badly and that's on the inside of the windscreen let's have a look under its bonnet not much to see really under here with the current light situation nothing nasty in the coolant and there's a little pop as I open that so there's a little bit of pressure there no evidence of any accident damage headlamps are all secure be interesting to know if the little drain system under here is all blocked up as well I've got previous videos on that from my last car where there were all sorts of leaves and things stuck in there it can happen and that can cause water to enter the vehicle through the heater so that is an alternative diagnosis other than the windscreen naturally I'll be investigating that these levers lack resistance they'll likely need doing as well you'll note there are so many videos I've made on a lot of these things already and I'm very uh aware that I don't want there to be too much duplication we don't need to recycle content but I will provide links to it where appropriate this wedge that lives under the passenger side carpet covers the battery seems to be broken this bits snapped off something's missing here so I need to get a new one of those it's a shame really we're just looking under this carpet let's see what's going on under here it looks like it's got one of these already fitted I made a video about that too so you can actually charge the battery without lifting up the carpets that's pretty good oh this is nasty in here look at all that filth that needs cleaning I'll be getting the Hoover straight in there got a Bosch battery a lot of modifications to wiring here this might be because it has parking

sensors that's what I reckon this is about looks more like speaker wiring but I'm pleased to see there's a fuse there anyway cuz if that didn't have a fuse and that went to ground anywhere under the carpet that would be a fire immediately I don't like these kind of connectors I'll be taking care of all of this and here are the parking sensors at the back it's quite funny that such a tiny little car would have parking sensors cuz essentially when you look behind that is the end of it can see with the wiring in there for them something nasty and gooey there so this is pretty much it I wanted to show you this before I've done anything to it before I've cleaned it hoovered it or fixed anything so see exactly how I bought it I was up very early this morning literally before it was light and I just couldn't wait to get out here I really hoped for a nice sunny day and that's exactly what I've got so I can set to work I'm going to Hoover this clean this and make it beautiful in terms of content I'm not going to be starting on that clutch just yet because I've still got a couple of bits to do on the Z3 and I'm also off on a California trip in December so I'm probably going to start this next year now although I will start sourcing Parts um likely through autod do and they always take a while to come through anyway CU they come from Germany but a good friend of mine has said that I can keep the city's garage which is good for the time being anyway so while I'm away it can be in his his garage it's a good garage it's dry it's not going to deteriorate in terms of water getting in anymore and then when I'm back like maybe just after Christmas or early January I can then get this gearbox out get the clutch sorted that's the main thing and then focus on the Cosmetics stuff I think this will be a nice little project as I said it was a cheap car Spar a repair bit of a gamble but when I was prepared to take and I think it will be some great content and I know that a lot of you will be very happy to see another smart on the flee massive thank you for those of you who have bought me a coffee I I I'm bowled over by how generous some people are all kind gifts through buy me a coffee do go back into the channel and help me to do things like this get another smart and I'm very grateful so thank you if you have unsubscribed because you thought it was the end of the smart content you can resubscribe because we've now got another one on the fleet thanks again for watching I'll see you again in another video very soon
