hey guys welcome to PB garage today we're going to have a look at how to remove and reinstall the HVAC blower in your smart 451. so I'm sitting here in the Brabus and my hvc blower has been failing slowly over time it started out you know it would cut in and out and then sometimes it would completely stop working and then I'd hit a bump and start working again and quit slowly die or whatever and that was fine in the summertime when I could just roll the windows down but now it's getting cold and I need that heat so I'll show you guys what the issue is so I'll just turn the key on here and then you can see nothing happens here blower doesn't work at all now we're gonna get at the blower from the driver's side footwell so I'm going to get down there I'm going to throw a towel down because it's wet but I'll meet you guys down there okay so we're down here by the pedals and you can see the blower motor just up there and you can see the plug uh right there that's in the end of the motor now I think that whole blower assembly is just held in with some plastic Clips on either side you can kind of see one over there and see one over here but it's really tight under here and uh tough to see so I'll get that blower motor out first I'm going to unplug that electrical socket and then pry the motor out and I'll show you guys once it's out because it should be a lot easier to see at that point okay so I just thought I'd show you guys before I pull it out so this plug here that little tab pushed it in towards the plug to pull the plug totally out and um a little bit of a challenge somebody's got some glue on it here I don't know why um and then so these tabs it turns out you just rotate the motor so you can see it's already part of the way out there I just left it in to show you guys so basically I just button this whole assembly to release that and then you can see it's free now so with the motor out here you can see got a little bit of debris in it but basically so this tab and this little tab here were into the housing clicked in like this so you just reach up give it a spin and it popped right out actually super easy to get at compared to a lot of cars and super easy to remove okay now I've seen a few people actually kind of rebuild these or clean up the contacts anyways and reuse them so I was curious to try and do it the same rather than just replacing it in case I can get it to work so to get access to that we're a T20 Torx on this bolt on the back of the housing here so we pull that guy out and then you can see we've got our motor here so basically looking at the motor here you can see where those brushes have been rubbing just in here and it's dark a lot of the carbon off the brushes seems to have rubbed off on it and it's worn into that uh whatever that is brass or bronze there as well so I have seen people on the internet just clean that up and then it gets working again it's a little bit deeper of a Groove than I was expecting so I don't know if our brushes are really making contact anymore but I think it's still worth a try okay so I've just got a little brush here in my drill and I'm going to get in there and try to clean that stuff off so you can see here I've cleaned that rotor off but it just makes it that much more obvious like look at how deep that those grooves are those channels from uh the brushes wearing against it so I don't have high hopes for this thing but I think it's still worth a try we can see if uh if we can get it working properly again so to put it back together here I'm just going to slide that guy back into the housing you see where the plug is here I'm going to line that up with the groove on the housing here for the plug and it should only go in one way so it should be pretty easy to sort out and then oh yeah we still got some of that glue that somebody put on it now we're gonna throw our Torx screw back in here just to hold that thing together not crazy tight okay let's go try it all right so I've put the fan back in here I think the toast part was actually clocking it back into position because it had quite a bit of resistance there but uh we're all plugged in we'll give it a try still nothing kind of what I had suspected so now I got to go find another fan uh another blower motor and throw that into the car here all right so luckily I had another one this is the one I just took out the bad one and I had a spare because I knew this was coming like I said The Blower's been on its way out for a while so I just threw that guy in keys on and here we go blower action sweet

so just before I close out the video here I thought I'd show you guys because I have this whole HVAC assembly out of the car as a spare I thought maybe I'd show you how the pump comes in and out uh when we're out here in the open so it's a little bit easier to see because I know it's super tricky to see when you're you know in the footwell so basically you just come up you're gonna unplug this plug so I'm just see the little that little tab there push that guy in towards the plug pull that plug out and then you're just spinning that pump oh this is definitely the hardest part one-handed there we go they just spin that guy out and you can pull your blower out and replace that guy this guy's going in the junk because this is my bad one but I'd use the spare and same when you're going back together just like that spin that guy in [Applause] plug in your plug make sure you hear that click and you're good to go so hopefully you guys enjoyed the video if you guys have um undone one of these and cleaned it up like the like I tried to do on this pump clean those brushes up and had good luck please get in the comments and let us know because I don't know if it's common to be able to save that pump that way or the blower motor just by cleaning that up so if you've done that or if you have a blower that's not working and you want to try it you clean it up and it works please let us know so that just other people can see in the comments and uh know whether they need to necessarily buy another blower motor before they start this job or not so have a good one guys thanks for watching and we'll see you next time [Applause]
