These are the parts that are adjusted to change the toe angle of the front wheels. They are designed with a curve so they can bend in the event of a side impact like you might get if you hit the kerb. This reduces the amount of stress passed through to the much more expensive steering rack. Jack the car up and remove the wheel to give you better access. With a 17mm spanner, undo the ball joint nut shown below. If the ball joint turns with the nut, you can hold it stationary with a Torx30 bit in the end. Wind the nut up to the top but don’t remove it. Hit the nut downwards to disconnect the ball joint which is held securely with an interference fit to the steering hub. Put the ball joint back into the hole it came from and then use a 24mm spanner to loosen the locking nut. As soon as it starts to move, stop moving it as we’ll be using that position to refit the replacement. Unscrew the old steering rod tie rod. Screw in the replacement (available from smart). Once it gets to the lock nut, fit the ball joint into the steering hob and loosely fit the nut. Tighten the 24mm lock nut up to the tie rod. Tighten the ball joint nut down (40Nm) and then refit the wheel. Although the tracking shouldn’t have changed, it’s worth having the tracking checked by a tyre shop with the proper equipment.
