Problem: Smart Fortwo front wheel bearings are pressed in with friction only, no C clip or retention mechanism, requiring removal and installation without a shop press.
Solution: Pull out bearings using a steel plate drilled with 3 holes bolted to the wheel hub, supported by metal sticks against the steering control arm stub and brake caliper bracket holes. Hammer in new bearings with an 8 pound sledge hammer using the 3 pins provided to protect bearings during installation. Alternatively, a 20 pound slide hammer could be used for removal. Assembly can remain in the car during this process.
Key facts: - Wheel bearings are pressed in with friction only, no C clip or fastener - No shop press needed for removal or installation - DIY method uses steel plate with 3 bolt holes and metal support sticks as press substitute - New bearings come with 3 pins to insert through wheel hub flange to prevent bearing damage during hammering - Installation done with 8 pound sledge hammer; removal possible with 20 pound slide hammer - Wear safety glasses as bearing pins can shatter during installation
